10/12/19 11:00am-1:00pm Choreography to Saidi Salamat with Tori King (all levels)
Saidi dance is more than movement with a cane or a specific costume, it is a dance with a specific flair and attitude that many dancers have come to love. Tori’s choreography to the song “Saidi Salamat,” by Monir Abdel Aziz, embodies the earthy and playful feeling that is characteristic of this style. All genders are welcome in this workshop, but this choreography embodies the “female” style of saidi dance, which is a satirical answer to the “men’s” traditional use, or overuse, of assaya. Please bring your canes if you have them (there will be a few available for your use and a few available for sale) to this all levels saidi class. History of this dance will be briefly, covered because we will spend the entire time dancing. Please bring a bottle of water and notebook and inform Tori of any injuries at the beginning of the workshop.
10/12/19 1:30-3:30pm Discovering the Story- Adding Meaning and Drama in your Dance with Cecilia Rinn(All Levels)
In this workshop we will explore the subtle but powerful emotional quality of Oriental Dance and how that can be utilized to add depth and “story” to any dance or music style. We will start with a short lecture and journaling exercises. Then we will warm up our bodies with a fast and furious shimmy warm up and move on to some exercises to discover and define the unique emotional qualities to different movements, body regions, and musical ques. We will explore though some simple combination a mini 5 part Raqs Sharqi routine to both Classical Egyptian music & iconic rock music. This will be a great value, not only as aiding in more powerful performances, but also being able to have a more satisfying and personally meaningful experience with your dancing.. Bring water, a journal or notebook & an open mind.
